JLA COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT 2005-06
The Crossroads
What is The Crossroads? The Crossroads gives women on the streets a chance to begin a new life. As a non-profit organization they provide support services for women who generally have a history of prostitution and usually have struggled with some form of addiction or mental illness. Crossroads’ services include: finding safe and stable independent housing, drug rehabilitation, job and life-skills training, mental health treatment, education, and medical and dental care. The Crossroads follows a family-centered approach and provides services and care for the children of its clients as well.

How did the Junior League of Albuquerque (JLA) partner with The Crossroads in
2005-06?
The members of JLA provided a range of services and programs to complement those already available at Crossroads:

Life-skills Training: Members will arrange and present a variety of life-skills trainings including: voter rights and registration, children’s dental health, financial planning and renter’s rights, professional etiquette, attire and career planning, and finding fun family oriented activities.

Family Play Area: A landscape architect is designing a family play area for the backyard of The Crossroads. This area will hopefully include tables for eating, a barbeque grill, a community garden, and a play area for women at The Crossroads and their children to enjoy. Our intent is to engage the greater community in the family play area at The Crossroads through groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremonies.

Monthly Donation Opportunities: The JLA will conduct monthly collections at our General Meetings. Items will be grouped by need area each month. Donated items include: school supplies, children’s toys and books, diapers and other baby supplies, cleaning supplies, make-up and hair products, and personal hygiene products.

Children’s Parties: The JLA Provisional class, together with The Crossroads Committee, will plan three parties for the children of The Crossroads, a Halloween Party on October 30th, a holiday party, and a Spring Fling.

Who Has Supported The Crossroads? In addition to the $10,000 grant and projects pledged by the JLA, Mayor Martin Chavez named The Crossroads a beneficiary of the 2004 Mayor’s Ball. Additionally, The Albuquerque Community Foundation granted The Crossroads $5,000.
