| Ronald McDonald Family Facility inside Children's Hospital at UNM |
In 2005, there were 6,390 child inpatients at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital. Families of these children often keep vigil at their children’s bedsides day and night, often for weeks at a time. Many families travel long distances to be with their children and are without their extended support system.
The Ronald McDonald House has arranged for an 1100 square foot family room in the new wing of the Children’s Hospital. This family area will include a small kitchen stocked with snacks, a laundry facility, and a play area for the siblings of the inpatient children. The Ronald McDonald House estimates that at least 500 families a month would use the family room. The Junior League of Albuquerque selected the Ronald McDonald Family Room as its Community Impact Project for 2006-2008.
The Junior League will help to get the room operational during its first year by helping with the design of the room, the marketing of the service, planning the grand opening event and staffing the room with volunteers. The second year will see the ongoing benefit of this room by staffing the room with volunteers and providing comfort to families in their time of need.
