The Junior League of Albuquerque will be partnering with Project Share, Inc. over the next two years (2008-2010).
Project Share: Background and Mission
Project Share, Inc. is a non-profit organization that focuses on feeding the hungry and homeless in Albuquerque in an environment that fosters growth, education and change. Project Share's concept was developed in the early 1980s by a restaurant owner who discovered a homeless person searching through the dumpsters behind the restaurant.
This man began serving meals to homeless people once a week. Gloria Blood founded Project Share, Inc. in 1984 and made it into the formal non-profit meal site it is today.
Today, Project Share serves over 64,000 hot meals per year. Nearly three thousand food boxes were distributed to families in need. One hundred and twenty (120) children per month ate a hot meal at Project Share with their families.
In addition to serving hot meals, Project Share has other programs to assist families including Adopt a Family Holiday Program, Operation Share to help provide food to families who have run out of funds, and programs to enrich learning through books.
The League and Project Share
In addition to our $12,500 yearly financial commitment to Project Share, the League will be engaged in the following activities:
- Cooking and serving hot meals.
- Administrative assistance.
- Canned food, clothing and other drives.
- Adopt-a-Family at Christmas.
- The Take a Book Home program to encourage reading and stronger families.
Funding from the League will assist Project Share to purchase necessary equipment, make repairs to existing facilities, and provide food supplies to families in need.
