President's Message

"The American Dream means giving it your all, trying your hardest, accomplishing something and then I'd add to that, giving something back. No definition of a successful life can do anything but include serving others."
- George H. W. Bush

Thank you so much for visiting the Junior League of Albuquerque (JLA) website and for taking the time to learn more about the League and our mission!  I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our work to cultivate leaders to address the critical needs in our community.

The Junior League of Albuquerque (JLA) was founded in 1934, and recognized as a Junior League in 1948. With over 400 members, the JLA is celebrating 80 years of community impact in our beloved Albuquerque Community.  We have a wonderful legacy and such a rich history in our community. As such, we strive to keep our mission at the center of all that we do. The Junior League of Albuquerque is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Over the years, as one of New Mexico’s largest non-profit volunteer organizations, JLA has been at the forefront of tackling our communities most challenging issues impacting women and children.  Many of our initiatives and programs have continued, with great success, to become integral parts of our city’s history.  JLA was instrumental in the founding of Explora! Science Center, the establishment of Volunteer Albuquerque, the building of the Ronald McDonald House Family Room, the establishment of the docent program and UNM Art Museum, and the implementation of state laws creating statewide kindergartens.

This year, we expect to donate over $200,000 in trained volunteer time and direct financial support – positively impacting thousands of women, children, and families in the Albuquerque community through our many projects.  In the true spirit of Junior League that is always forward thinking, we have reevaluated our focus area within the current context of our changing community’s needs.  We have recently chosen ‘foster care, specifically aging out youth’ to be our focus area. We are so excited about making a true impact in this particular focus, and making a footprint in the hearts of children and young adults, that have been impacted by foster care, the system, and all it encompasses.

Our Fundraising team is looking ahead to successful events and profitable returns through the Red Carpet Affair - a 1920's themed fall event, and our Truck-A-Palooza spring event, as well as smaller fundraisers throughout the year, including grant-writing and ongoing partnerships and donor programs.  All of this work done by us is on a VOLUNTEER basis. Every dollar that we raise during the course of the year means that we have more money to give back to the community.

Our community impact is vast and doesn't stop with our community projects. Members go through intense hands on and facilitated learning training and go on to lead other non profits, sit on boards and take their skills in to the work and personal lives. Leaders truly do start here.

I'm excited to serve and lead the membership of the JLA and to witness what will be an amazing year with extraordinary things on the horizon, as President of the Junior League of Albuquerque for the 2017-2018 year. Since I have begun my tenure as a member of the JLA in 2006, I have been inspired and amazed at the vast talent, passion and dedication that resides in the members of JLA and am proud of the accomplishments of our great work with many projects and organizations within the Albuquerque community.
