President's Message

Dear Members and Friends of the Junior League of Albuquerque,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 Junior League of Albuquerque year! I am thrilled to be serving the League while we take a look back at our beginnings as the Junior Club of Albuquerque in 1934 and as we spend the 2019 calendar year Celebrating 85 Years of Service to the Albuquerque Community! In addition, we transitioned to our current status as the Junior League of Albuquerque in 1948, and as such, we celebrate 71 years as an organization member of the Association of Junior Leagues International. Throughout the 2019 calendar year, we will be celebrating by embracing “85” in various ways while giving back to the community. I hope you join us in the celebrations!

The new fiscal year officially kicked off on June 1st, but leadership was already hard at work, and we seamlessly began our new roles for the year. Our members are exceptionally committed to our mission: promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities. Consequently, Chair Training, led by newly elected Training & Membership Director Kirsten David, helped prepare our chairs for a year of service and dedication. The Board and Management Team met in early June for the first joint meeting of the year where we reviewed our new respective roles under the Governance/Management split, discussed what we learned from the prior year, and brainstormed ideas for the new year. The Management Team was already deep into developing an Annual Plan for Board approval, and hit the ground running with their first meeting of the new year in early June.

The Board of Directors met for a retreat, which was brilliantly facilitated by our own Sustainer Pamela Chavez, owner of Collaboration$ Consulting, where we brushed up on the responsibilities of nonprofits. In addition, the Board was hard at work drafting and reviewing the policies that now govern the league under the new governance and management structure. The Board finalized and approved our first edition of the League Operating Policies and the League Membership Policies that will now replace our Standing Rules. Additionally, I’m proud to announce that our Board has also made the commitment to Diversity and Inclusion and have adopted a commitment statement which positions our League to further advance diversity and inclusion in coming years. Our next step will be assessing our current Diversity and Inclusion efforts and establishing a task force to plan and drive the work. These are truly transformative and exciting times as we celebrate our past and look forward to the future.

Membership recruitment is in full swing and I hope to see many of you at our recruiting events over the summer as we meet lovely women who will make marvelous additions to our League. You are all encouraged to bring a friend (or two!) and spend some time sharing your story while getting to know the future members of the Junior League of Albuquerque. Keep your eye on your in-box for invites to upcoming events.

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Fourth of July holiday and you are enjoying the summer sunshine!

Joyfully,
Nataley Quintana
