The Junior League of Albuquerque has made several strategic changes over the last several months in response to our changing world. These changes are to strategically align our work with our mission, values, and vision. The major decisions that we have made include refocusing on our community impact and our members’ leadership development by reinstating community advocacy, diversifying our fund development strategy, reducing our major fundraising events, and deepening our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
These decisions have the repercussion of changing the committee structures. The Fund Development and Community Impact Councils were impacted the most by these decisions. Those members who have been impacted can change their placement and will be contacted by the Membership Development Council over the next few weeks to find the committee that is right for you.
Due to Covid-19, JLA has opted to delay recruitment of new members with the next class beginning in January 2021. This will allow the New Member Chairs to develop a meaningful, virtual or (hopefully in person) new member experience. Because of this, the new member advisors will be realigned to other committees.
In diversifying our fund development strategy, the board is committed to reviewing our finances and improving our investment strategy. The good news is we are financially sound. Along with this, our Fund Development Council is developing a grant application strategy, a robust annual campaign strategy, and they are furiously working on ways to host an event that is meaningful to JLA members and to the community. I know you will be so excited to see what they have created.
In my last letter, I informed you of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. I am happy to report that there has been strong interest in this committee by a wide range of members and I look forward to learning and seeing improved member engagement through this effort. Several members completed the first 21 Day Racial Equity Challenge and several more are working through the second session. I am eager to hear more of what you have learned and encourage all of the membership to take advantage of this training available to you through your JLA membership.
Through all of this, you are making an impact on our community. We have had over 3,000 diapers distributed from our Diaper Bank since June 1 and have delivered necessities to our community partners. Look for the updates and photos in our social media and upcoming Summer newsletter.
The board of directors is hosting an All Member Engagement meeting in two sessions this month to present the state of JLA and details on these strategic changes and an overview of the annual plan. I hope that you can “attend” one of these sessions. Information on these sessions will be in the upcoming E-blast, the website calendar and the member-only social media feeds. I am looking forward to interacting with you all and know that we are better together.
